I think we're at a point in the pregnancy where it's a bit quieter than at other times. By this I mean we've had our first ultrasound, my wife hasn't got a massive belly yet, it's four weeks until our second scan and finding out the gender, we can't organise very much just yet as knowing our baby's sex will make it easier, etc etc.

Given all of this, at times it's almost like the pregnancy is a bit like thinking about Christmas in February - you know it'll happen one day but it seems like a long time away yet.

There are things though that make me realise how close we really are to having our first child. Yesterday, for instance, I purchased our first lot of nappies!

I think we’re at a point in the pregnancy where it’s a bit quieter than at other times. By this I mean we’ve had our first ultrasound, my wife hasn’t got a massive belly yet, it’s four weeks until our second scan and finding out the gender, we can’t organise very much just yet as knowing our baby’s sex will make it easier, etc etc.

Given all of this, at times it’s almost like the pregnancy is a bit like thinking about Christmas in February – you know it’ll happen one day but it seems like a long time away yet.

There are things though that make me realise how close we really are to having our first child. Yesterday, for instance, I purchased our first lot of nappies!

Acting on some advice from my Aunty, we thought it a good idea to buy a box of nappies whenever we see them on special, so when baby does come along we are stocked full of nappies and don’t need to rush out one morning with a pillow-case precariously stapled together around our kid’s bottom!

Target had a special on newborn nappies so I toddled off and conducted my first-ever Nappy Transaction. I didn’t feel daggy at all, even when I walked down the shopping centre with a big Huggies box under my arm, free for all to see as no bag would fit it!

When I got home I sat in the feeding rocking chair (a chair that mothers sit in to feed their babies, it rocks gently, lots of fun) and got out one of the pregnancy books as I hadn’t caught up on what was ahead of us over the next month.

I re-read what happens in weeks 12 – 16 (we’re at 15 now) and was reminded that our baby now has all its limbs and organs! The little one is about 7.5cm long and it has a heart, kidneys, pancreas (and testicles or ovaries!) and everything else. If visualising a human heart with a diameter of about 1mm doesn’t make you wonder at the marvel of the human body, nothing will.

It seems the feeding chair is so soothing that it makes fathers-to-be fall asleep mid-chapter, only to be woken by their mother-in-law calling and hearing her daughter’s husband sound sleepy at 4pm, again.

Later on in the night my wife and I were looking at the nappies and wondering how quickly the 108 of them would go, some people say babies can go through between4 and 10 a day, looks as though we’ll need to keep building our pile!
