The first 3 weeks

I am a little sad today, as tomorrow I return to work. The past three weeks I’ve been at home, as my wife and I welcomed our son into the world and set about starting our life together as a family unit.

It’s been an amazing time, a lot of ups and some small downs, but – and here’s the thing – we have a baby boy now! He is here, he is ours to raise and love, and we are excited. Tired, but excited.

Our boy has arrived!

Wow, the past couple of weeks have been an absolute rollercoaster ride. A cliché for sure, but an apt way to describe all that’s happened.

Our baby boy is here, all is well and I could not be happier. Here’s how it all unfolded…

Father’s Day 2008

Every night this week I have made a little wish that my son would be born, and be home, before Father’s Day. It’d be a sweet story to tell if he even arrived on the day. But no, he hasn’t come yet and I spent my first Father’s Day giving in utero hugs to my boy.

Next year will be all the sweeter, he’ll be almost 1 and hopefully be able to hug me himself. I cannot wait.

I did but see the due date passing by

Boy oh boy this past week has been TOUGH! In the lead-up to the due date I have been at the top of Mt. Adrenaline, 24-7. I never knew it was possible to sustain such excitement and anticipation for so long, it’s making me batty!

Antenatal classes 4 & 5 – bringing baby home

Week 4 of classes was the best so far I thought. We spoke about how our lives would change once our babies arrived, not only as a couple but also as individuals.

Antenatal class # 3– Feeding

After the “shock and awe” approach taken by our teacher last week, I was a little nervous about the methods that breastfeeding was being taught and spoken about. I half-expected I would walk in and see a woman up the front, breast flopped out and ready to get going – but I soon learned it was only going to be a video in week 3, and sighed with relief.

Antenatal class # 2 – Labour II

Class 2 was all about ‘alternative’ deliveries. The title had me expecting all sorts of means of birthing – water births at home, Indian and Aboriginal corrobboree-type ceremonies and so on. But in this context, as I was to discover, ‘alternative’ pretty much means anything other than ‘straightforward and easy as pie’ delivery, which is pretty much all of them so I’m learning.

And it also turns out that I hadn’t gotten off lightly on the gruesome video front at all.
