Predicting the big day

With classes under our belts and the nursery almost done (more to come on my very fatherly achievements on that front), we’ve been making some predictions on when the boy will make his grand entry.

Antenatal classes 4 & 5 – bringing baby home

Week 4 of classes was the best so far I thought. We spoke about how our lives would change once our babies arrived, not only as a couple but also as individuals.

Antenatal class # 3– Feeding

After the “shock and awe” approach taken by our teacher last week, I was a little nervous about the methods that breastfeeding was being taught and spoken about. I half-expected I would walk in and see a woman up the front, breast flopped out and ready to get going – but I soon learned it was only going to be a video in week 3, and sighed with relief.

Antenatal classes begin

Last night we checked off an item on the ‘things to do before the kid comes’ list that I’d been looking forward to for a while – we started our antenatal classes at the hospital.

Shopping spree(s)

We’ve gone to town over the past few weeks, buying up big for our boy! My wife and I heard an ad on the radio for the ‘Big W Toy Spectacular’, which started at midnight the other night and I didn’t think much of it, until she asked if we were going. Hi Daddy!

Thursday before last, I felt our baby kick for the first time! It was the weirdest – yet coolest – feeling in the world.

And the gender is…

The previous two days passed so slowly, I thought they were never going to end. Nights of little sleep certified my excitement and impatience, and a low tolerance of anything non-baby was its manifestation.

We left nice and early, getting over to Heidelberg a good hour before our appointment time. We filled some time by getting a coffee and a bite to eat at the nearby McDonalds; a lot of people and families have no doubt done the same thing at one time or other.

Things that make it all the more real

I think we’re at a point in the pregnancy where it’s a bit quieter than at other times. By this I mean we’ve had our first ultrasound, my wife hasn’t got a massive belly yet, it’s four weeks until our second scan and finding out the gender, we can’t organise very much just yet as knowing our baby’s sex will make it easier, etc etc.

Given all of this, at times it’s almost like the pregnancy is a bit like thinking about Christmas in February – you know it’ll happen one day but it seems like a long time away yet.

There are things though that make me realise how close we really are to having our first child. Yesterday, for instance, I purchased our first lot of nappies!
