Drifting further away, and shrinking

Fading away

The milestones of my boys – reaching 2 years and 6 months respectively, recently – has of course, as these things go, turned my mind to my own father.  He passed away when I was in my late teens, as I’ve written before, both here and at another blog.  What I’ve been realising lately though, is [...]

The Dad Joke gene strikes again

homer_facepalm

It’s happened again – I was just hanging around and being normal, when the dad joke gene kicked in and I let another doozy out. It wasn’t intentional… really. Here’s what happened: My wife and I were putting Leo to bed, when she started talking about what they were doing tomorrow.  E’lise mentioned to Leo [...]

Family weekend away

We took our first family holiday as a foursome this weekend – our first time away just the four of us. We stayed in Healesville and went to the Sanctuary. It was only an overnight trip, but we had a wonderful day in and enjoyed the break together.

Our boy has arrived!

Wow, the past couple of weeks have been an absolute rollercoaster ride. A cliché for sure, but an apt way to describe all that’s happened.

Our baby boy is here, all is well and I could not be happier. Here’s how it all unfolded…

Father’s Day 2008

Every night this week I have made a little wish that my son would be born, and be home, before Father’s Day. It’d be a sweet story to tell if he even arrived on the day. But no, he hasn’t come yet and I spent my first Father’s Day giving in utero hugs to my boy.

Antenatal class # 2 – Labour II

Class 2 was all about ‘alternative’ deliveries. The title had me expecting all sorts of means of birthing – water births at home, Indian and Aboriginal corrobboree-type ceremonies and so on. But in this context, as I was to discover, ‘alternative’ pretty much means anything other than ‘straightforward and easy as pie’ delivery, which is pretty much all of them so I’m learning.

And it also turns out that I hadn’t gotten off lightly on the gruesome video front at all.

Excited, yes, but capable?

While every day is filled with excitement and anticipation about my baby boy, some moments I wonder if I can be the father he needs me to be. I’m not a bad bloke (if I do say so myself) but is that enough?

There is so much that I’m responsible for now. There are the obvious things to start off with, like how to sit up, and how to swallow food. Those two I pretty much have covered. I’m also fairly confident in the toddler years – I can use the big boy toilet with best of them and I am a dab hand at drawing shades on the sun. After this though, have I got what my boy will need?

My life has just changed forever

Today my wife and I learned that we are expecting our first child.

We married in April last year and in November, decided that she would go off the pill. We weren’t ‘trying’ in the true sense, but we were open to her becoming pregnant if that eventuated. We wanted to start properly trying toward the end of this year.
