Another milestone today (I suspect there will be a whole heap of them from here on in), in that we had our first family portrait taken.
I’ve always thought of family portraits as a necessary evil, and one whose long-lasting effects can be limited by not showing the result off too prominently – or not at all, as the case may be.
In years gone by in my own family growing up, we had the lovely shots of us boys and Mum gathered together around a stuffed footrest/cushion and a hideous electro-marble wallpaper in the background.
My wife and I made a conscious effort to avoid that and I think ours will be quite nice.
We teamed up with my wife’s sister and her husband and kids, and booked a session with a photographer at their home studio. The photographer specialised in candid-type photos, rather than the standard pose and grimace shots of yesteryear. We were pleased with that! We had a bunch of shots taken of us with our boy, then each of us separately with him. There were some lovely ones of him with his cousins all together.
The photos were fairly playful and relaxed and the kids were in comfy clothes rather than starched-till-rock-hard Sunday Best, so another tick in the good column.
We plan to get a nice family portrait blown up for my mother and my wife’s parents – the first official portraits of the new grandchild!
It’s really nice knowing we captured our little family at this stage of its growth, it’ll be great to look back on in years to come. We plan to get some taken each year from now on and build up a collection of portraits that’ll adorn some hallway or corner table in our home as we get older and less pretty.
